Job Description:
The purpose of the Senior Oil Market Analyst (Chemicals) role is to provide core central competence in support of Base Chemicals and Aromatics market analysis within T&S Oils as part of the Geneva Initiative. Geneva aims to capture and monetize insights from the information flow advantage Shell Trading possesses, leveraging our domain expertise to generate deep analytical insights, including through advanced analytics. Focus shall be on identifying and articulating succinctly forward market tensions regularly for different emerging supply, demand and capacity scenarios, and to work closely with the Crude and Product trade desks to aid formation of competitively advantaged trading convictions through the liquid horizon (generally less than 24 months but may extend up to 5 years).
The Senior Oil Market Analyst (Chemicals) will be a member of the Shell Trading Markets Analysis (STMA) team, reporting to the Manager Shell Trading Market Analysis. STMA covers central baseline management for Oil and Chemicals Supply, Demand, Asset Capacity & Maintenance, Trade Flows, Market Tensions and Modelling, supporting the Regional Cross Book Analysts and Crude & Products Commodity Desk Analysts in their fundamental analytics activities. The STMA team represents the primary Trading interface with the Oil Markets Analysis team in Strategy to ensure close collaboration between analytics functions across the Shell Group.
The role will lead global efforts to professionalize Base Chemicals and Aromatics market analysis for Shell Trading’s Crude and Products Commodity Desks, and will be responsible for:
Delivering short term demand outlook for Base Chemicals and Aromatics, and their associated feedstocks (24 months to start, extend to 5 years at a later stage).
Identifying underlying pricing mechanisms driving the price formation for Base Chemicals and Aromatics, and their associated feedstocks taking into detailed consideration the oil/chemical manufacturing interface.
Identifying and disseminate to trade desks underlying market tensions and hence potential dislocations (prices, margins and trade flow) in the Chemicals and associated feedstocks markets using the Regional Tension Tool, in close collaboration with the STMA Tension, Modelling and ACM analysts.
Supporting trade desk on monetising insights and develop short-term market analysis tools as needed, leveraging IT Product teams from the Geneva Powerhouse.
Contributing to the STMA monthly market report on the evolution of the Chemicals market.
Collaborating with the Chemicals Fundamentals Team, Oil Market Analysis team and the Shell Scenarios team as part of a wider competence centre for market tensions in the Shell Group, linking our short, medium and long-term Demand outlooks to leverage insights across each time horizon of focus.
As the role involves conducting analyses and leading discussions around integrated oil and chemicals economics between crude and refined product trade desks, a technical and/or optimization background in refining and chemicals manufacturing industries and an understanding of their inter-dependencies are essential. Having expansive knowledge of Base Chemicals and Aromatics markets would be an advantage.
Stakeholders Management / People & Skills – The Senior Oil Market Analyst (Chemicals) will be expected to engage professionally and proactively with the other members of the STMA Team, the Regional Cross Book Analysts, Desk Analysts, the OMA Team, the Chemicals Fundamentals Team, traders, RTLs, and myriad stakeholders at the working and leadership levels (GMs, SVP) across the T&S organization and in the functions. This will include defining and delivering analysis requirements, ensuring clear information flow and communication across the regional and global analyst and trader communities and building formal and informal networks to support Geneva activity.
